The novel isn't BL, because it takes place before Eroica, and Klaus hasn't met Dorian yet. Der Freischütz is an excellent, chilling and thought-provoking glimpse into the dark and deadly world that Klaus is a part of, and it goes a long way towards explaining Klaus's motivations and the reasons for his paranoia. The novel contains graphic violence and multiple murders, including one that Klaus himself commits. (Self-defence. A nasty business, nonetheless.)

This image is from the bunkobon version. The cover isn't by Yasuko Aoike, obviously; but don't worry, the contents are. Klaus looks the same as he always does. Not that he doesn't look smashing, here!
Just to introduce it to you, Der Freischütz is German for The Freeshooter, and as you might expect, it's a story about an assassin -- a handsome Russian assassin with a taste for blood, and for the thrill of the hunt. He's been sent to kill three men, two of whom are KGB double agents. The last man he's supposed to kill is Klaus.
Klaus doesn't want to be killed, obviously, and his tenacity makes the assassin more and more obsessed with him. (It is kind of gay, especially since the assassin keeps saying that Klaus is "teasing" him, and even "tantalizing" him.) But there's no actual BL to speak of. Klaus's struggle with this assassin is the core of the story, which is very serious and not at all like the fun-filled romps we get to see in Eroica. Really bloody marvelous read, though. (Bloody and marvelous. If you know what I mean.)
So if you're looking for your next Klaus fix, this is it! It's full-throttle espionage action, and it gives us a rare insight into Klaus's character. I hope that you'll enjoy it. Feel free to discuss it here, and to leave your thoughts and comments.

My favorite thing about Der Freischütz is that it features Klaus with his sleeves rolled up and his tie undone, and in his bare feet. And Klaus interacting with children.

Fabulous
Thanks for the scanlation.I never thought any scanlation of this story exists!
As you say, this story has a mood of a certain spy novel.
This is what Klaus's job is about.
Der Freischütz made me understood in a way why Klaus is no annoyed with Dorian's interfering .
If Dorian never gets his way, his mission goes as beautifully smooth as this story.
The Russian assassin with blond, reminds me Christopher Walken in his younger days somehow.
